Build your HOA fence request
Four steps. You get a PDF with a cover letter, fence specifications, a site sketch and our contractor details, ready to send to your HOA.
The HOA packet builder needs JavaScript. We can prepare your HOA paperwork for you:
What is in your HOA packet
Your PDF has four pages, each with Academy Fence Builders’ name and phone number in the footer so your HOA knows who to call:
- Cover letter to your HOA’s architectural review committee, filled in with your name, address, lot number and a summary of the fence.
- Fence specifications: material, style, height, color, gates, post and panel details, and the warranty.
- Site sketch showing where the fence will go, with the length of each side, the gates and a north arrow. It is drawn from the fence line you traced in our Yard Measuring Tool, or from a quick sketch you make here.
- Contractor information: our address, phone, license and insurance details and warranty summary.
How to use the HOA packet tool
- Enter your details. Your name, address and HOA name go on the cover letter. We save them so we can help if your HOA has questions about the project.
- Confirm your fence. If you priced your fence with the fence cost calculator, the material, style, height, length and gates are filled in for you.
- Add the site sketch. If you measured your yard on the map, your fence line is already drawn. Otherwise, enter your lot and house size and tap the corners of the fence line. You can also skip the sketch and attach your own plat or survey.
- Download the PDF. Print it or attach it to your HOA’s request form or online portal.
Tips for getting HOA approval faster
- Read your covenants first. Most HOAs publish fence rules in their covenants or architectural guidelines: allowed materials, maximum heights, which side faces out, and whether front-yard fences are allowed at all.
- Match what is approved. If neighbors already have approved fences, a matching material, style and color is often the quickest path.
- Show the finished side. Many HOAs require the finished side of the fence to face the street or the neighbors. Our specifications page notes how the fence is built.
- Include a plat or survey if you have one. Our sketch shows the fence layout, but it is not a survey. Attaching your plat helps the committee see setbacks and easements.
- Ask about timelines. Committees often meet monthly. Submit early so approval does not hold up your installation date.
HOAs in metro Atlanta and North Georgia
Many neighborhoods across Gwinnett, Forsyth, Barrow, Walton and the surrounding counties have an HOA with an architectural review step for fences. Rules differ from one neighborhood to the next, even within the same city, so always check your own HOA’s guidelines. Your city may also require a permit, separate from HOA approval. Confirm with your city or HOA before you build.
When your packet is approved, book your free on-site estimate and we will confirm the measurements and schedule your installation. Questions? Call us at (770) 867-0479.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need HOA approval to build a fence?
If your home is in a neighborhood with an HOA, you almost always need approval before building a fence. Check your covenants or ask your management company. Building without approval can lead to fines or having to remove the fence.
What does an HOA need to approve a fence?
Usually a request form or letter, the fence material, style, height and color, and a drawing or plat showing where the fence will go. Some HOAs also ask for a product photo or the contractor’s insurance. This packet covers all of those.
Is the site sketch a survey?
No. The sketch shows the approximate layout and lengths of your fence for review only. It is not a legal survey of your property lines. If your HOA requires a survey or plat, attach a copy.
How long does HOA fence approval take?
It depends on your HOA. Many review committees meet monthly, and some respond within a couple of weeks. A complete request, like this packet, helps avoid back-and-forth.
Is my information shared?
We save the details from step 1 so our team can help if your HOA has questions. We never share your information. The PDF is created in your browser and is not uploaded anywhere.
Can Academy Fence Builders talk to my HOA for me?
Yes. If your HOA has questions about materials, specifications or our insurance, call us at (770) 867-0479 and we will help.
