How to measure your fence line on a map

    1. Enter your address and press Start measuring. The satellite map opens on your home.
    2. Tap each corner along one side of the fence, for example from the back corner of the house to the back corner of the lot. Drag any point to fine-tune it, and zoom in for accuracy.
    3. Finish the side and start the next one. Name each side (Back, Left, Right, Front) so we know where it goes.
    4. Add gates from the list. Each gate drops onto its side; drag it to where you want it and choose a walk or drive gate.

The total updates as you go. When it looks right, press Price this fence to send the footage and gates into the fence cost calculator, or Make my HOA packet to turn your layout into a site sketch for your HOA with the HOA Approval Packet.

Prefer a tape measure? Switch to Enter by hand and type each side’s length. You get the same total and the same next steps.

    Tips for an accurate measurement

    • Zoom all the way in. Points placed at close zoom are far more accurate than points placed from above the neighborhood.
    • Measure where the fence will actually go. Fences usually sit a little inside the property line. If you are not sure where the line is, check your plat or survey.
    • Skip what is already covered. Leave out sides where your house, a garage or an existing fence you are keeping already closes the yard.
    • Watch for trees and shadows. Tree cover can hide the ground on satellite images. Place points where you are confident and we will check the rest on site.
    • Count gates as part of the line. Draw straight through gate openings; the gate replaces that stretch of fence.

Satellite measurements are usually within about 5 percent. We always confirm every measurement during the free on-site estimate before you get a final price.

Measuring yards in metro Atlanta and North Georgia

Many lots here are wooded or sloped, and some are much larger than they look from the street. A few local notes:

    • Tree cover. Pines and hardwoods can hide part of a back yard on satellite images. Measure what you can see clearly and add a note; we will measure the rest on site.
    • Slopes. The map measures flat distance. On a steep hillside the fence follows the ground and can run slightly longer, which we account for when we visit.
    • Property lines and easements. Many subdivisions have utility or drainage easements along the back or side of the lot. Your plat shows them, and your HOA or city may limit fences inside them.
    • Before digging. Georgia law requires underground utilities to be located through Georgia 811 before post holes are dug.

    Frequently asked questions

How accurate is measuring a fence on a satellite map?

Usually within about 5 percent, if you zoom in and place points carefully. Trees, shadows and slopes can affect it, which is why we confirm every measurement on site before giving a final price.

How do I measure for a fence without a map?

Walk the fence line with a measuring wheel or a long tape and write down each side. Switch the tool to “Enter by hand” and type them in.

Should I measure along the property line?

Measure where the fence will be built, which is usually a little inside the property line. If you are not sure where your line is, check your plat or survey, or ask us during the estimate.

Do you save my address or the map?

Your address is used to find your yard on the map and is kept in your browser for this visit so other tools can use your measurements. Only the points you place are saved, never the map image. We only receive your address if you send us your project.

Why can’t I see the map?

The map loads only when you press Start measuring. If it is busy or unavailable, the tool switches to entering measurements by hand, which works the same way.

What do I do with my measurements?

Press “Price this fence” to see a price range for your footage, or “Make my HOA packet” to create an HOA approval request with a sketch of your fence line. You can also send the measurements to us for an exact quote.
